Professor Charles Bamforth is one of the most respected beer authors and experts on the planet. He has spent a lifetime researching brewing, and among a slew of other titles, is currently the “Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting & Brewing Sciences at the University of California, Davis”. For those of us who are not lucky enough to enroll in the U.C. Davis brewing program at this time, there is an hour-long lecture from Bamforth available on Youtube.

As a featured speaker in the Authors@Google series, Bamforth dicusses some of the themes from his book “Grape vs. Grain,” and gives a great talk on beer in general. If you would like to hear an informative, entertaining and enthusiastic explanation of brewing, this is a great place to start:

It was a great night in Woodland Park for the inaugural Holiday Cheer Christmas Beer homebrew competition. The mood at Bierwerks was more than merry as brewers and beer lovers gathered to sample an array of holiday beers.

The competition was designed to invoke the spirit and flavors or Christmas, and the brewers delivered with 21 entries from as far away as Florida. Peppermint, cardamom, raisins, pineapple sage and a slew of other spices and ingredients made appearances, making it a difficult contest to judge. (Though cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves were the most popular.)

Here are your 2010 winners:

1st – Greg Geiger “Geiger’s Holiday Ale,” Highlands Ranch, CO.

2nd – Dan Rabin & Coby Royer “Old Smootchy Pants Holiday Ale,” Boulder CO.

3rd – Edd Wittenberg “Mr. Ginger’s Milkstout,” Colorado Springs, CO.

4th – Randy Walsh “Blue Spruce Christmas Ale,” Bellvue, CO

Congratulations to all.

Ho Ho Homebrewers!

Here’s a yuletide present for you – an American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned event for holiday beers. Sponsored by BierWerks Brewery in Woodland Park, CO, entries will be accepted for one category only – 21.B, (Spice, Herb and Vegetable) Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer.

This contest is open to all amatuer brewers. Two (2) bottles of your beer must be submitted along with the completed entry form and a $5 entry fee.

Deadline to enter is Dec. 7.

Bottles must be standardized to the current AHA competition requirements: 10-14 ounce bottles with no paper or inked labels or distinguishing marks on the bottle identifying the brewer. Each two (2) bottle entry must have identical labels attached with rubber bands and each entry must be accompanied by a completed recipe form.

Judging will be made in accordance with AHA and BJCP standards. Prizes will be awarded to the brewers of the top four beers. (Because it’s the holidays, and hey, we’re feeling generous.)

Submissions can be dropped off or mailed to the brewery between Dec. 2 and Dec. 7. Send entries to:

The honey in the flower or lotus does not crave for bees; they do not plead with the bees to come. Since they have tasted the sweetness, they themselves search for the flowers and rush in. They come because of the attachment between themselves and sweetness.
- Sri Sathya Sai Baba

In a shocking move, the National Honey Board is promoting the use of honey in beer. OK, the actual surprise is that they have some very good information and some recipes available as well.

Honey beers are not necessarily sweeter tan other beers (though they often are), and have a real depth and complexity. And like malted barley, there are dozens of types and styles of honey to explore. It’s an adjunct well worth checking out.

You can read the honey board’s page on honey and homebrewing here:

http://www.honey.com/nhb/technical/brewing-information/

There are links to information on the types of honey available to brewers, five all-grain beer recipes and some information on making mead as well.

Woodland Park, CO – Southern Colorado beer lovers can look forward to a new source of libations with the opening of a Teller County craft brewery in 2010.
Woodland Park Brewing Company has secured a location at 121 East Midland Ave., off of U.S. 24 and adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center.
Brewers Jeff Aragon and Brian Horton are currently setting up equipment with the hopes of brewing by the end of December and serving beer by the end of January 2010.
“We are super excited to be moving to Woodland Park. There are some great opportunites here for brewing and to be part of a great community,” said Aragon.
Aragon and Horton bring an impressive pedigree to Woodland Park, having created a number of award-winning ales and lagers for Trinidad Brewing Company for the last seven years.
“We want to test the market here and see what people want to drink,” Aragon said.
“Were’re going to listen to the customers and community so we can give people a place to go to enjoy good local beer in a fun environment.”
The new brewery will be able to produce 100 barrels (3,100 gallons) of beer per month, which will be sold at the brewery, as well as local restaurants and bars. The brewers plan to keep four beers on tap at all times, with rotating seasonal beers available as well.
“It’s about making the best beers we know how to make,” said Aragon.
“We’re passionate about brewing. We want to be able to educate people about great beer, and encourage homebrewers and anyone who is curious to come in, try a beer and check it out.”

Pueblo, CO – Shamrock Brewing Co. has named Jason Buehler as its new brewer. Buehler replaces Alan Stiles, who has overseen the brewing at Pueblo’s only brewpub for the past four and a half years.
Buehler, 32, has worked at Rockyard Brewing in Castle Rock since April, 2007. He is a graduate of the brewing program at the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago and holds a degree in marketing from the University of Miami of Ohio.
“My father was a homebrewer and that’s what got me into it. I love the combination of art and science – taking recipes and ideas in your head and putting flavors together to brew your own beer,” he said. “I am curious to see what people here want me to brew. I’ll be listening to the customers to see where their tastes are.”
Buehler said he will continue to use Stiles’ recipes for the American blonde lager, Irish Red ale, porter and English pale ale, while adding his own seasonal and specialty beers.
“I love being able to brew a variety. I love brewing in America and especially Colorado – there is a just a lot of beer and a lot of experimentation,” he said.
“There is a great camaraderie with the brewers here that you just don’t see in other states, and we wouldn’t be as good individually without each other.”
Stiles is leaving to become head brewer at Phantom Canyon Brewing Co. in Colorado Springs.
“I’m definitely going to miss this place. It’s been a good experience and I’ve gotten to work with a lot of great people here,” Stiles said.
Shamrock Brewing is located at 108 West 3rd Ave. in Pueblo, and can be found online at www.shamrockbrewing.com.
